Gas Log Set vs. Gas Insert: Which Is Right for You?
We’re happy to install a gas log set. If what you want is a beautiful flame, ambiance, and a lower initial investment, a gas log set may be a perfectly good choice.
However, gas log sets have some important limitations that we believe every homeowner should understand before installation.
Important Considerations With Gas Log Sets
🔥 The Chimney Damper Must Remain Permanently Open
A gas log set operates inside an open fireplace and vents through the existing chimney. For safety, the damper must be secured in the permanently open position or removed.
That means your chimney remains open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year — even when the fireplace isn’t being used.
❄️ An Open Chimney Means Heat Loss & Cold Drafts
Because the damper remains open, heated air from your home can continuously escape through the chimney.
Under certain weather and wind conditions, the opposite can also occur: cold outside air can travel down the chimney and enter the room through the fireplace.
So even when you’re not enjoying your gas logs, the open chimney can affect the comfort and energy efficiency of your home.
💨 Wind Can Cause the Fireplace to Shut Off
Downdrafts and turbulent air inside an open fireplace can interfere with the gas log set’s pilot flame.
If moving air pushes the pilot flame away from its safety sensor, the system may automatically shut itself down.
The result can be frustrating:
You turn on the fireplace.
It lights normally.
A minute later, it goes out.
There may be absolutely nothing wrong with the gas log set. The problem may simply be airflow inside the chimney — something the appliance itself cannot control.
🌡️ Gas Log Sets Are Primarily for Ambiance — Not Efficient Heating
A gas log set can produce a beautiful, realistic fire, but an open fireplace is not an efficient heating appliance.
A very large percentage of the heat produced by the fire travels directly up the chimney rather than into your home.
If your priority is ambiance, that may be perfectly acceptable.
If your priority is heating your home efficiently, we strongly recommend a gas insert instead.
🚪 Fireplace Glass Doors Must Remain Open During Operation
If your fireplace has conventional glass doors, they must remain open while the gas log set is operating unless the specific fireplace and appliance are expressly designed and listed for another configuration.
Closing conventional doors around an operating gas log set can trap excessive heat inside the firebox.
That heat can permanently damage components including:
– Electronic ignition modules
– Gas control valves
– Millivolt valves
– Wiring and other internal components
In severe cases, overheating can require replacement of major components or the entire gas log system.

Because gas log sets operate inside an existing open fireplace and their performance can be affected by chimney draft, wind, downdrafts, fireplace configuration, and homeowner operation, Tahoe Chimney & Fireplace does not warranty the ongoing operation of gas log set installations.
We include one complimentary follow-up visit if an adjustment is needed after installation.
Any additional troubleshooting, adjustments, or service visits are billed at our normal service rate.
We have established this policy because we have encountered these conditions in real-world installations. We would much rather explain the limitations beforehand than have a customer disappointed afterward.
Why We Recommend a Gas Insert
For homeowners looking for a dependable, efficient, long-term fireplace upgrade, we strongly recommend a direct-vent gas insert.
Unlike a gas log set, a gas insert is a complete heating appliance installed inside the existing fireplace.

Choose a gas log set if:
You primarily want the beauty and ambiance of an open flame, want a lower initial investment, and are comfortable accepting the limitations of an open fireplace system — including heat loss, drafts, lower heating efficiency, and the possibility of draft-related operational interruptions.
Choose a gas insert if:
You want your fireplace to become a reliable heating appliance with sealed combustion, significantly greater efficiency, blower-assisted heat circulation, temperature control, and much more predictable operation.

If you’re simply looking for ambiance, a gas log set can be a great option.
If you’re making a long-term investment in your fireplace and want comfort, efficiency, reliability, and heat, we recommend a gas insert.
Both create a beautiful fire.
The difference is that one is primarily designed to look like a fire. The other is designed to heat your home.
